Swallowing and airway protection are major concerns in the care of patients with Head and Neck cancer. Consequences of cancer as well as of therapies can affect the swallowing mechanisms and therefore the feeding quality of life. Using case studies in head and neck cancer as examples, experts will explain the approaches for integrating into management so as to develop clinically meaningful outcomes. Downstream targets such as oropharyngeal, hypopharyngeal, upper esophageal sphincter and esophageal pathologies will be discussed.

After this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain the approaches for integrating into management so as to develop clinically meaningful outcomes.
  • Consider downstream targets such as oropharyngeal, hypopharyngeal, upper esophageal sphincter and esophageal pathologies when integrating approaches.
  • Understand endoscopic measures to achieving safe swallowing in patients with dysphagia secondary to adult head and neck cancers.
  • Discuss medical and therapeutic interventions for specific swallowing disorders.
  • Describe evidence-based protocols for dysphagia in head and neck cancer patients.
  • Identify future directions in management of dysphagia in head and neck cancer patients.
