President's Message

Dear DRS Family,

It is indeed an honor and a privilege to serve as the President of the Dysphagia Research Society. I want to thank all the members of the society for giving me this opportunity and hope to perform up to the high standards set by my predecessors. The Society will be going into its 23rd year and soon we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary. This is a great testimony to the hard work of the members of the society and congratulations to all the past and present board of directors and members of the various committees.

As a gastroenterologist living in the world of the “esophagus”, through this society I learned a lot about dysphagia research beyond the esophagus. The multi-disciplinary platform of this society made this happen. However, looking at the current membership and the abstracts submitted to our annual meetings, we seem to be losing one of our greatest strengths; namely, multi-disciplinary representation. To foster inter-disciplinary research, we will need to retain and grow our membership from disciplines like gastroenterology, otolaryngology, radiology, neurology and basic sciences. Interconnected with this goal will be to let the world know that we exist and we are a one-of-a-kind premier society focused on dysphagia research. This society will also facilitate connecting students and members early in their professional careers with established funded researchers through formal processes. Permanent and ad hoc committees are being formed to address these issues.

We will soon be launching our new web-site. After several years of deliberation, I am glad to say that we finally approved our new logo at the last DRS meeting. I want to take this opportunity to personally welcome the 2014-2015 Board of Directors, committee members and new DRS members. Congratulations to Cathy Lazarus for a successful 2014 DRS Annual Meeting and Post-Graduate Course. The Program Committee for 2015 will look forward to build on the success of prior meetings. Please save the dates for the 2015 DRS Annual Meeting (March 12 – 14) and the Post-Graduate Course (March 11) to be held at the Westin Michigan Avenue Hotel in Chicago.

I encourage all members to feel free to contact me with any questions, suggestions or concerns and to "like" the DRS on Facebook:
